The Relationship of Asthma and Anxiety Disorders

Authors:Katon, W.J., Richardson, L., Lozano, P. and McCauley, E.
An unfortunately good example of how methods and conclusions can take great leaps of logic. The study was a review of Medline literature to identify the number of times the words asthma appeared in conjunction with the words anxiety, panic (ever been really short of breath?) and psychological disorders. They further reviewed a series of studies referenced within the bibliographies of these Medline references. The authors conclude their is a high co-morbidity of anxiety in patients with asthma. However, most of the studies "are limited by small samples, nonrepresentative populations, self-reported asthma status, and lack of controlling for important potential confounders such as smoking and asthma medications."
